How to Speak at a Graduation Ceremony

Brainstorm the meaning of your school experience. You've been in school for quite a while, so ask yourself questions about what that experience has taught you, about your relationships or about life and success and about the stages of your growth throughout that time .

• To find more ideas, ask yourself other questions, for example:

• How have I changed since I started this level of education? How have my other classmates changed since they started?

• What is the most important lesson I can learn from attending school?

• What were the most significant successes in the period we spent at school?

• What are the challenges we will face during the next stage of our journey and how are we better prepared to meet them through what we are taught in this school?

Start developing a theme. You want a theme for your speech. Your theme can be very specific or very broad, but you want a theme to tie it all together. Without a theme, your speech will resemble a remembrance of memories of yesteryear, without lesson or moral to remember. Usual themes may include.

• Adversity. Adversity is a challenge that you have overcome as a group to get to where you are now. Maybe one of your classmates has had cancer and has shown the rest of the class like fighting not only against a disease like cancer but also to overcome all the obstacles that stand in your way. It is adversity.

•       Maturity. This is a very good theme for high school students. Maturity consists of becoming adult and assuming responsibilities. Maybe you can describe how you started when you were young students in the first year and how today, students in the upper classes, you turned into brilliant adults, not out of need, but out of your will to Grow and grow.

• Life lessons. School is a microcosm of life. It is an elegant way to say that the school allows people to learn about life in general. The school teaches you that hard work pays off, that there is more to learning than memorizing equations, that what you do outside the classroom is just as important as what you do in the classroom And that friendship is like cement that allows you to remain united.

Think about the structure of your speech. Structure is the way to order each part of your speech so that what you say makes sense.

• Consider using the thick-layer method. Imagine a hamburger, the top layer represents your introduction, the middle layers contain your ideas in the form of paragraphs and the bottom layer your conclusion. Use a lot of tomato sauce, mayonnaise and other condiments, this is your jokes, but remember that too much mayonnaise can make a good tasteless hamburger.

Start the introduction with something hard-hitting. It can be an interesting quote, a fact, a story or even a good joke about your school or class. In any case, the introduction must attract the attention of your audience. This means that it must be relevant and startling. Maybe, could you start like this.

• I remember when we met four years ago in this room for the first time. We were young, and we still seemed asleep, as if we were in bed. And here we are today gathered in the same room, older certainly, but appearing as sleepy as on that day.

• I do not want to alarm you, but the class of 20 has a serious problem. This is not a financial problem. This is not an intellectual problem. It is a behavioral problem. The class of 20 has the problem of being a genius class.

Write the body of your speech in an interesting way and do not forget to link it with your theme. Start strongly. Advertise your best idea from the very beginning to catch the attention of your listeners.

• Be interesting in saying something unexpected. If you talk about how to deal with adversity, everyone will expect to hear you talk about exams, sentimental relationships or time management. Why not evoke something unexpected? Talk about notes that do not always correspond to what you have learned, perhaps or about the difficulty of letting teachers have time to breathe. Surprise your audience in innovative ways.

• Make sure you are not off topic. Ask yourself how this paragraph refers to the central theme of the discourse? If there is no relationship, then ask yourself whether you should keep the paragraph.
